Richard Duardo and the McNay

The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, TX, recently paid tribute to Richard Duardo. In February, VPAM will be hosting the large group exhibition “Estampas de la Raza” that will include Richard’s work.

The contemporary art world and the McNay has lost a dear friend with the sudden death of master printmaker Richard Duardo. Often called “The West Coast Warhol,” a nickname that he was sometimes ambivalent about, Duardo was a mover and shaker in the Latino art community in Southern California for decades. He was also the founder of Modern Multiples, one of the most influential and prolific print shops in the country. – See more at: Click Here

Open to all friends and family, there will be an evening prayer/vigil on:

Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Location: Chapel on the Hill

Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills

We as that you have a moment of silence, eat a tamale or turn the music up real loud so that we may all send him off in spirit together with love in our hearts and a smile on our beautiful faces.

As Richard had so often noted, ‘whether fame or famine, we make art!’. So we carry on Richard’s vision and make art we shall. Thank you for your love and support, Modern Multiples and the Duardo Family.”

We thank you all for posting your loving memories of Richard. – it has been of great comfort to all of us during this time.

Studio Collaboration with Charlie Anderson

Artist collaborations are a celebrated element of Modern Multiples studio and have yielded some of our favorite projects in the past.  An example of one of our most favorite collaborative projects which stemmed from within our studio was “Sumo # 2”  a collaborative series made by Modern Multiples’ own Richard Duardo and Scottish artist Charlie Anderson

Charlie Anderson, Serigraph, HPM, Fine Art, Modern Multiples, Collaboration, 2012
Buliding layers; a process shot from Charlie Anderson in Modern Multiples studio.

Charlie Anderson is best known for his choppy collaged imagery, made up of layered stencils of advertisements, magazine clippings and various other forms of contemporary media.  Anderson is able to develop a richly complex atmosphere of text and imagery with his work and it’s not uncommon for him to include bold figures within his compositions.  Richard Duardo enjoys a similar format in many of his works; often developing an abstract background of shapes and color to support a strong figurative subject in the foreground.  The two styles lean nicely to this collaborative project where both Anderson and Duardo actually hand painted into each specific print, making them not only unique but alive with gesture and movement.  You can view “Sumo # 2”  in our online store, where unique versions are still for sale.  Enjoy!
