The artist, Oscar Magallanes’ painting of the iconic Hip Hop figure Tupac Shakur was the basis for the serigraph “West Coast Machiavelli” The portrait assists the audience in seeing the world through a different lens. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Titled “Heuristic” the portraits also serve as an exploration of the makeup of popular culture and people’s movements by contrasting present and past paradigms.
